why does society praise celebrities instead of docctors or scientist?
celebrities have really not done too much for humanity, but doctors save lives and make tremendous impact on humanity, so do teachers, scientist, anthropologist why doesnt the media give us more on them, rather than sport people or untalented people, movie stars, why not soldiers, fire men, religious leaders, why is society so lame,and then they wonder why our society is so jacked up

because in America, celebrities have rally good press agents, and Americans are fixated on beauty and superficiality. They neither care about, nor understand education, or science

I heard an annecdote:

There was a large benefit dinner being held. Lots of VIP's were there, Heads of state, Business leaders, Doctors, Socialites, Artists, etc.

Everyone found their arranged seats and started introducing themselves around. This Research Scientist was explaining how he was working on understanding telomeres and how that may apply to apoptosis and cancer research. A few people at the table recognized his work from the journal articles he had published.

The next gentleman said his name was Tom. The Scientist asked him what he did for a living. He said that he was an actor. The scientist asked him how it was working out for him. "Tom" said that he had been in a few movies, maybe he would recognize: "Top Gun", "A Few Good Men", "Mission Impossible"...
The Scientist apologized and said that he didn't watch many movies, but was happy for his success.

Obviously the actor was Tom Cruise.
The Scientist didn't even know who he was. It had no bearing on his universe.

God willing, I will be that scientist someday.

Because society gets its info from the tube and silver screen. Doctors and scientist are not on the tube or screen, but celebs are. The celebrities actually have become the "teachers" of society. They teach us how they want us to think. They are always tooting their own horns.

It's all political and about making the most money... no matter how brainwashed and immoral it might be. Sad that our culture is surrounding a fabricated perfection of fame.

Oh! its like underestimating the talented actors/stars/celebrities.But ask scientists and Drs if they could make people cry and laugh?Emotions rule our lives,which are universal.These are the people who make us believe in these emotions.Otherwise life is a dull chemistry and biology.It would be a complete jargon for me if a Dr invented something great for his field.

Because our society has taught us to watch celebrities with envy. I don't think that the doctors really care though, we(the public) watch the TV and then need glasses, or eye surgery which they have to do. It's a win-win.

It shows immaturity, in the same way that a kindergartener admires the garbage collector more than a scientist.

it is true that society looks up to the wrong people, but these other people really shouldn't be looked up to either, because they are not as great as you think they are either. In reality, most of these teachers, doctors, preachers, etc are not in it for the love of the people/job, but for their own personal gain. Don't look up to anyone but yourself
