celebrities have really not done too much for humanity, but doctors save lives and make tremendous impact on humanity, so do teachers, scientist, anthropologist why doesnt the media give us more on them, rather than sport people or untalented people, movie stars, why not soldiers, fire men, religious leaders, why is society so lame, and then they wonder why our society is so jacked up

Asking the question about "celebrities" obviates the question... celebrities already have proven interest to the public. Think a little about what a celebrity usually does... they make their career of being in the public eye. The other professionals that you mention are busy doing their jobs.

An average person can't even understand what a doctor or a scientist DOES. They have no means of differentiating between a good scientist and a bad one. And most of the doctors which make the news might be more appropriately named butchers instead.

On the other hand, the average person does know if an entertainer is entertaining. It's the entertainer's job to reach the average person on their level, not pursue goals on planes of understanding they can never hope to reach.

Thus it's much more straightforward for most people to vote for the next American Idol rather than chair a committee to decide where research dollars should be allocated.

It's too bad, really. But I'm not sure I see a solution. Do you?

If you tell a simple story to your son He will listen to it but if you add some music , some drama and some acting to it then he will enjoy it more and remember the acting and pieces if he likes he will try to copy it.So is the society and culture they are entertainers and they get same value for it.However the real respect is given to Doctors , teachers and Soldiers who put their lives for the nations.Such respect people will never give to celebrities because they are not real. They do something on someones Direction .speaks written by others ,Look like larger than life because of Make-up.They are actors on the stage but in real life they are different and indifferent to public and in natural calamities.

Come on now.... Barry Bonds can be compared to Thor or Christ or Plato or any "HERO" you chose. What has a fireman done that Michael Jordan hasn't? And of course how can you even mention Neil Armstrong in the same breath as say a Brad Pitt. The above mentioned names have done more for the betterment of humanity than any so called academic.................................... Hah HA ha HA ha..... What a joke....... I totally agree with your inference. Why don't we look to real people doing real things for meaningful reasons as role models? Well i GUESS THAT IS THE INFLUENCE OF THE MEDIA AND VERY BAD PARENTING SKILLS. But, of course the parents learned how to raise kids with the instruction of the media so what did we expect?

We seem to be obsessed with the beauty of our celebrities, as a Society. perhaps because such beauty and charisma as Brad Pitt has IS NOT earned. He was born that way, as opposed to the massive effort and dedication of our Doctors, teachers, etc.
Maybe it is an unconscious desire we have to get wealthy and famous with no effort....instead of doing it the old fashioned way, with hard work. Or better yet, living our lives a little less selfishly, and not being obsessed with money and looks.

That's just it celebrities are there to be celebrated. They make good movies and do extreme things, that motivate people. Doctors charge really good for fixing people up, or whatever they do since there are many different kind of doctors. Do people stock doctors like they do celebrities?
