Psychotherapist is just a generic term for someone who engages in "talk therapy." It is a catch all for a number of types of people with varying credentials. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor first, then specializes in mental illness. Only a psychiatrist can prescribe medicine for mental illness. A psychologist typically has a Ph.D and licensure.
