Erm... hay *is* grass. It is dried and bundled so it can be stored and fed to the cows during times when there is less grass for them to graze on.

In the winter, when the ground is covered with snow, they can't get to the grass, so hay is provided for them. It can be bales of sorghum, alfalfa, brome, or bermuda to name a few types of hay. In addition, our cows (I'm talking about beef cattle, not dairy cows) are fed range cubes which is a pellet about the size of a shotgun shell (or tube of lipstick) that is made up of different types of grains. The cows need the protein in the range cube during the winter to stay warm and keep up milk production for their calves which are born generally from the end of December through February. They do eat grass in the winter, but that's not all they eat.

They eat a lot of stuff.
Hay clover and Alphalpha are fed to cows to maintain the flavor of their milk. They can also eat asparagus, dandylions, tomatoes or anything that grows from the ground. If they eat watermellon it turns their milk blueish-green. They have four stomaches, they're good digesters.
