I think it was Carol Burnett who said the pain was like taking your lower lip and stretching it over your head. Ouch!

My first pregnancy went so fast, I didn't have time to feel much pain! Of course it hurts, and I went without an epidural. But honestly for me, once the head was out there was very little pain. Once I held my baby, I didn't feel any pain. I was offered Tylenol after delivery, but I just wanted to eat breakfast and hold my baby. I was only in labor/delivered in 4 hours...some women it takes a lot longer. So, it all depends on how your particular labor and delivery goes. Also know that every pregnancy is different...one labor can go great and the other, the exact opposite. I'm pregnant again and although I'm only 4 months along this pregnancy has been the exact opposite of my first. Hope this helps....good luck.

Honestly? It's the worst pain that you will ever forget. When I was in labor it felt like someone had one of those old fashioned saws, the kind where a man was on each end, and was trying to saw me in half very, very slowly. Everything hurt from my back to my legs and everything in between. I could not get comfortable and let me tell you, epidurals are the best thing, ever. Forget all the natural birth junk. It's ok for some people, but personally, I hate pain and did not want to subject myself to it. I don't care if women have been having babies natural for zillions of years. People also have been sky-diving, swimming with sharks and base jumping off of buildings, too. Does not mean I'd do it!!
It would not be given if it would hurt the baby, you know? So, yeah, having babies hurts, but the pain meds they give you are wonderful and in the end you get your baby either way.

Honestly no one can tell you what it feels like. Depending on your pain tolerance and if you are getting an epidural makes alot of difference too. The pain of the contractions are like no pain I have felt before but when you see the baby and hold it for the first time whatever pain you did feel you forget immediately. I felt giving birth was the most awesome feeling in the world to me especially if you deliver vaginally. Bringing life into the world is a true miracle. Good Luck and God Bless you and your little miracle.

Having a baby is painful, but the good news is that the pain is only temporary. Think about it this way, if it was too bad people wouldnt do it over and over again (myself included). There are lots of ways to control the pain of birth: Epidural, spinal, narcodics, and even hypnosis. Making sure you are taking care of yourself throughout pregnancy is the first step in making your recovery easier. As with anything, good prenatal care is a great way to make your whole pregnancy- not just labor and delivery- an enjoyable experience. As I sit here looking at my 9 month old taking his afternoon nap, I am quickly reminded how fast time passes so try to enjoy every minute of your pregnancy and your childs first months. Check out www.babycenter.com for great information on EVERYTHING. They even have message boards with people who are in the same stage of pregnancy as you- kinda like a little support group. It was a great source of information while I was pregnant and I still use the info on the site to help with my sons level of developement. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Pain is all in the mind. If you have a high threshold for pain, it won't be so bad. If you are afraid of the experience, your body will tense up and cause more pain as the tension works against the contractions. The position you're in makes a big difference and laboring women should be encouraged to try different positions to get relief from pressure. Being relaxed by having soothing music, massage, friends, etc. around helps. I read somewhere recently that a woman can actually deliver in orgasm if her partner helps her. What a way to be born! :)

No it is not that painful, with an epidural that is.
Otherwise, yes it is that painful. You just forget about how painful it is after you have the hormones running thru your body that inspire feelings of bonding.
My 1st I took seconal and that was it. I must have had a lot of hormones running through me b/c I don't remember it being that painful. I do remember my midwife tricking me by saying that I coudln't have an epidural b/c it was too late.
My 2nd one I remember it just like it was yesterday. It was painful. All I remember is the pain. I said, "I want an epidural and I want it now." I might have been able to handle the pain but I didn't want to.
However I would never have an epidural again. I didn't get that sense of completion that comes when you finally push that big headed parasite out of you (and I don't plan to get pregnant again). Now mind you, I was being nice about the parasite.

Honestly? Yes, extremely painful. You have never felt anything like it , and you probably won't again (unless you have another child.)
On the upside, the minute your baby is placed in your arms, you forget about the pain (at least momentarily) (it still hurts for a few weeks, but not the intense pain that you feel during labor and delivery)
It is also the most wonderful thing in the world, and that almost cancels out the pain, so...

While I was giving birth, my doctor kept telling me "it was just like going to the bathroom." NO, it's not. I have NEVER passed anything the size of my daughter on the toilet.
By the way, I did it without drugs unintentionally since I got to the hospital when I was fully dialated. Oops. It was pretty painful, but not as bad as I had expected. I had planned on an epidural, but now that I did it "naturally" I would probably pass on the pain meds the next time.

For some women, labor is merely uncomfortable. (I had a pregnancy and birth like that.) The others were terrible!!!! Every pregnancy and labor is different, but you can definitely expect SOME discomfort, if not a lot!!! It depends a lot on your attitude going into the labor, your level of knowledge about what is occuring, and also the baby's presentation and whether it is an induction. Inductions are notoriously more painful.

It is the worst cramps ever, if you get an epidural, I understand you don't feel any pain, just be sure to get one before it is delivery time! By the time my epidural kicked in, the baby was already born, so I felt everything...VERY PAINFUL, but VERY VERY much worth it.
