Truth: I watched a show on animal emotions once and a chicken farmer had one exotic chicken on his farm. She eventually had chicks and one day a hawk flew overhead while her chicks were "playing" the front yard. She dove over her chicks, spreading her wings to cover them. The hawk swooped down and took a few feathers off her, but missed the chicks. She was unharmed. After that the old farmer quipped that if anyone ever called him a chicken, he'd be mighty proud!

I believe there was an incident in Egypt where several people lost their lives trying to free a chicken from a well. The chicken eventually made it out by herself.
