Data on magnetic media such as floppy disks (and hard disks) is stored by turning magnetic particles this way or that way. To erase or write over the data, the magnetic head just turns the particles again. In a CD, the data is burned onto the disc, and that can't be undone.

Information is magnetically written to a floppy disc. A CD rom disc, the information is actually burned into the disc so when the light hits the disc and reflects back to the head it can be interpreted into data.

well the first answer is ridiculous.....if that is so ,how re-writeable Cd's can be over written for even 200 times or more......well i don't know the whole concept but i think the first answer was the worst one......and because of this reason(that floppy can be re written and normal Cd's cant), floppies even after being only 1.38 or 1.44 in size cost around 15 Rs/ piece and CD of size 700 MB costs from 7 Rs. to 13 rs /piece(speed=52x)....and re-writeable Cd's are of 35 rs/piece(speed= 10x)

Floppy is working the same way as hdd. But you can delete files from rewritable cd also.

CD use laser technologies.
Floppy use magnetic field technology.(like your hard drive)
And you can use rewritable CD "CDRW" that use laser tech.
