There is a great product called Squirrel Away that comes in little packets, is very cheap and you mix it in with the bird seed. The chipmunks and squirrels don't like it and won't eat the food, but it doesn't harm them or the birdies. I found it at WalMart in the garden center.

Two thoughts - both humane, note:

Put the bird feeder on a pole, with a large dome under it. The squirrels will not be able to climb over the dome unless they can defy gravity. Some bird feeders are already sold this way.

Put the bird feeder on a very thin wire betwee two trees or posts. Too thick of a wire will allow the squirrels to tighrope-walk down it (I've seen it! It's hilarious!). Or make the wire slippery.

Of course, neither of these will prevent the squirrels from getting the seed that the birds drop on the ground.

Good luck!

Put metal around the tree ... (Long enough for them not to jump over it )

Or if its hanging ... Use biggest metal pie plate and drill on top of birdhouse that should keep the chipmunks out!

Maybe other people has better ideas than I do cuz its been a while since I had a birdhouse

lots of ways. they have to be able to get to them. hang them by fine rope or put vaseline on what they hang on now. If they are on a post, put a pizza pan on top of the post and then the feeder or grease the pole.

Use "safflower seed" squirrels/chipmunks hate it. I did and it really works. You can get it at Home Depot stores.
