In October every island is recommended for family vacations.
I think the best islands for that are:
1. Corfu(avoid the south part of the island that most non Greek tourists go,it's not good.Prefer the north which is great!)
2. Kefallonia
3. Syros
4. Andros
5. Skiathos
6. Kythira(great,you'll love it!)
7. Rhodes
8. Crete

Have a nice time to Greece

October is a time when small secluded islands are too secluded (you might not find a restaurant open). So it is better to go to an island that has some steady population or tourism. Mykonos and Santorini would be lovely at that time, because there will not be much tourism. Naxos is wonderful for family vacations, but it is a cool place and in October it could be a little cold. Syros would be my first choice: it is the capital of the Cyclades, it has a beautiful neoclassical town, and picturesque villages with nice beaches. Also nice shops, restaurants, hotels, etc.

Take the most southern destination Crete.
This to have the best temperature and to avoid too many rainy days. I believe the average for October on Crete is 5days of rain; the more north you go in Greece this number will be higher.
I have been in Crete in 2002; during the 1 week stay, we had 3 days of heavy rainfall.
I wish you a good stay.
Love Greece.

If you want the tourist experience, go to one of the islands other people have suggested. If you want a more authentic Greek experience, stay on Skopelos .. I can personally recommend Takis and Sophies' new villa at their resort, Del Sol. It has everything, taverna, pool, tennis court, gardens ... it's inexpensive, with the Aegean out your window and a dozen paces away, the wonderful village a five minute stroll past the harbor, where you can find a rental car for $15/day, an internet cafe, and friendly, warm villagers who love children. If I had to chose another, I would recommend staying on the mainland. Mt. Pelion, the home of the Centaurs, has everything: ancient and unique architecture, the Aegean, small friendly villages, very few tourists, lots of hiking (great hiking on Skopelos, too). Wherever you go, try to stay for your whole trip in one place ... traveling is one thing, being there is another thing entirely. Good luck with your trip ... you'll love it!

Corfu is great but might be very rainy in October. So Crete or Rhodes would be a better choice. Another choice is Santorini or Paros.

That is a personal thing.. I would tend to say Rhodes.. I was in the other islands but too touristy for me

Oh yes.. I forgot.. Crete is nice but I would never go there again.. All I saw there were grapes drying for raisons.. It is sort of a blah place.

Korfu (or Corfu)....It's the closest, biggest, and has the most diversity. I'd HIGHLY recommend it! We went there for several days, staying in different towns around the perimiter. We rented motorcycles, and rode them around the island for 3 days! Awesome! Any questions, email me tonevault@yahoo.com

Oh yeah, REALLY Cheap, too....especially in the remote and BEAUTIFUL towns! I want to go back!

There are many prospective places. I would suggest something between Rhodes, Cephalonia and Crete, depending on your will!
