I go to a private school where the science fair thing is very competitive. I am in the top classes so therefore I am expected to come up with a hard project. I have tried going to many websites but I mostly find easy projects. I would like to do something with plants but I will except other interesting ideas. NO VOLCANOS OR ANYTHING WITH ANIMALS. NO ELEMENTARY LEVEL PROJECTS.

to really win it is not so much the novelty of the project but the proper data collection, evaluation and conclusions... conclusions should include all that you learned... even if you learn your hypothesis was wrong... that is important too! it is not a screw up.

you can have a simple project... look at commercials and notice the 'tests' that they claim about their products for ideas... one commercial was about a lip balm... showed how effective it was because when it was smeared on a rose petal the petal stayed soft longer than another lip balm...

so if you used that idea you have to first evaluate is the test a good one... and then do multiple rose petals with several lip balms and of course a control... plot your data... make graphs, take pictures daily or even hourly... of results...

The project does not have to save the world... it really is about learning to gather & compare proper data.

keep a journal... write all kinds of things in it... not too personal though it is not a diary... but jot things like tempertaure and humidity and see if they are effecting your data... sunlight or dark room...etc...

have fun!

I judged an interesting project where the student had investigated the effect of various sound waves on plants. He planted 4 different plants- making sure all were planted under the same conditions, same type of soil , same lighting conditions, same watering schedule etc. The only thing he varied was the types of music to which the four were exposed. He had one plant that he had placed near a speaker that played heavy metal 24/7 - one by classical music, one in a soundproof box, and one as a control where it was in a normal room environment. Not a hard project to set up - but a lot of science involved with controlling all the variables. You might try to work out something similar on your own. ( The one near the classical music did grow taller than the others and the one subjected to the heavy metal had some strange growth patterns.) I'm not sure if the hypothesis was really proved - but an interesting concept nevertheless if the experiment is well constructed.
