My 11 year old son would like a laptop for Christmas. Due to his age, I hesitate to get him an expensive one. Dell and Gateway seem to be reasonable alternatives. If anyone has any input, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

Circuit City is running a deal for a 399 laptop and 0% interest till Jan'07.

Dell has some good deals, too. I agree with above that getting a desktop would probably be a better solution. Last month, Dell had a 350 deal for a basic desktop and 17" monitor.

There are plenty of ways to get free, legitimate software to run on a system, so you wont have to break the bank with security software or office-type software, too. I've posted on a few ways to save a dime, myself.

First of all, laptops are delicate. So an 11 year old will probably break it. Here is a comparison of repair costs.

Dropping computer
Laptop - total loss
Desktop - why would you drop it?

Spilling something in keyboard
Laptop - $300 or more repair
Desktop - $25 keyboard

Stolen
Laptop - total loss - laptops are the most stolen item in America
helping to finance drug addicts in a worsening problem
Desktop - you'd have much worse problems if your house was broken into

A desktop is cheaper and easier to upgrade. So if you want to plan a future, get a desktop.

If you are still HELL-BENT on getting a laptop for your child, then go to Wal-mart or Costco and get a low cost Toshiba, and consider it a THROW AWAY. (kiss that money goodbye)

I don't offer an apology for not SUGAR coating this warning. I see broken laptops all the time.

Personally I wouldn't give an 11 year old a laptop, but if you're going to I would go with dell, and don't get many of the fancy extras that make it seem cooler. They are not necessary and can really make the price add up.
