does anyone know of any very well known and prestigous colleges for women?

The two most prestigious are Wellesley, in Massachusetts; and Smith, also in Massachusetts. Mt. Holyoke is also well known, but a slight bit less prestigious, as is Bryn Mawr. I'd still consider both pretty high-level schools, though. But Smith and Wellesley, with arguably Wellesley being #1, are the tops.

Barnard is affiliated with Columbia University, and is quite prestigious. It's a women's college, but your degree will say "Columbia University". Worth checking out as well.

why you'd hamper your education experience by limiting your choices -- and a choice based on sex is beyond me.

Please, re-think what your motivations are and choose the best place to learn your craft.
