What if we took all of our troops home and stoped buying, selling, and trading with other countries? Who would hurt more the world or the U.S.? What if we took all the money from the war effort and put it into the U.S. schools, police, and ect..? What would happen?

They is kind of the way we were leaning at the beginning of ww2. We did not want to get involved with that war. So we got attacked by Japan.

Wow that is a big question. I have some time so I will give you my opinions. Agree or not, they are simply my opinions.

...troops home. Terrorism spreads across the middle east. A much bigger war develops between different terrorist grops that all want to have control.

...stopped trading. Oil prices in America sky-rocket. If we are no longer buying foreign oil, and are not allowed to drill for our own, there is a lot less oil... the law of supply and demand always takes control. Prices for all other stuff will go up as well. Just as an example, when is the last time that you bought something electronic that was entirely made in America?

Who would hurt more...? That is the big one. If we become isolationists though, do we really care about the rest of the world? Yes the US would be hurt, but you have several things to look at. Economics, security, government,... Each one will be affected in a very different way.

$$ from war in US 'stuff'... I have personally never seen a situation where more money thrown at any government institution makes it better. Instead of putting it into schools, police, (both of which should be supported locally), work on paying down the national debt.

Finally (warning, here comes my soap-box), I believe we would be forced back to life more along the lines of how this country was founded. Free-Enterprise would again become the economic foundation of this country. Personal responsibility, instead of relying on the government for a hand-out, would become necessary in most aspects of life. Large corporatons would cease to exist, and small private businesses would thrive while a much stronger sense of community than has been present for over a hundred years would develop in cities and towns all over America.

Hope this isn't too long, just my own thoughts as I mentioned initially.

The answer to that lies in the example of Cuba which has been isolated from the U.S. since the 1960s when Fidel Castro led his guerillas to power. Look for videos and old tv clips of the country. Read articles about its economic state. Think about what would happen to the U.S. if it were to stop importing the hundreds of millions gallons of oil consumed daily, produce and cheap electronics, cars and car parts, clothing, and almost any product you can buy in a store, What would isolationism do for us?

I agree we should bring our troops home. But I go farther than that. I think the U.S. should stop trying to be the world's stabilizer and controling power, stop being a policing country and should revert to the neutralism of the period before the First World War. We need to get our noses out of everone elses business. We have enough business to take care of at home. I think that all military bases worldwide should be closed and returned to the countries they are located in. We should sell off the bulk of our military materiel and reduce the size of our forces to just those needed for immediate national defense. We should not be pursuing policies protective of U.S. industry, businesses and corporations marketing in foreign economies. We should make them be independent of our military protection. We should maintain enough naval, air force, army and marine personnel and materiel to defend our shores and country here at home and stop trying to conquer the world through business backed up by our military and political power. One nation in the Americas has done this: Costa Rica. All of the money it could and would have spent on military might and campaigns was turned into education and medical care for the population. It has become the most stable country in Latin America, as well as having the highest levels of education and income. Education is free for all citizens, as is medical treatment. Sweden has long been an example in neutrality also, but few other countries, if any, seem to understand it.

If we can't follow positive examples, we can't can't set them.

Saudi arabia would hurt that is for sure lol. I think isolation would be hard on our economy since most of it is about imports and exports but I think we would bounce back eventually. The good thing about it is we'd stop giving money to China and terrorism.

US of course. From where do we get oil, clothes, food and other things? not from US but from other countries. US would be nothing without the world.

okidoki we got what was coming to us when Japan attacked us...we weren't really being neutral. Isolationism doesn't work, nor does just throwing a bunch of money at a problem...any smart person could see that.

Interesting proposition. Perhaps the nation could strengthen itself and emerge as a respectable super power after regrouping.

We'd hurt for a little while in terms of oil etc. But the rest of the world would be devestated.
They need us a whole lot more than we need them.
Just think about all the foreign aid we give out.

This begs the question WHY, WHY, WHY do we subsidize others with our aid, buying power and , troops?????
The answer I'm afraid lies in the undeniable fact that powers exist that our pushing us away from national sovereignty and towards a New World Order.

Well, it wouldn't be the first time the US pretty much retreated within our borders. Isolationism doesn't work. We tried that prior to WWII, and look where it got us.
