My father was ill for a long time and in the house for most of it, but when my mothers dog used to come into the room it would bark at the corner of the ceiling...does anyone have an explanation of this or is the dog just suffering from dementia?

I believe animals especially dogs can sense that there is a spirit or that there is something not just right, My dog one night woke me up growling and she looked as tho she was trying to protect me, So yes I do believe you. Maybe it was something else but I believe it was a spirit.

Yes, I think they are sensitive to spirit, I have several experiences with two of my dogs on the events of death.

Our dog howled like mad when the neighbour died next door during the night. This dog never normally howled at any time, and we did not know about the death until the following morning.

When my father was cremated, I took his dog past the Crematorium a week later in the car, and the dog howled and cried and got really stressed, but settled once we had passed it.

And if you have a spirit in the house, the dog will sense it .

Most dogs can sense spirits, they usually bark and the hair stands up the the back of the neck, if you are walking anywhere they sense something is not right, you will find they pull on the lead and refuse to go don't be afraid they will always protect you.

Yes they can. And so can some humans. And a spirit isn't necessarily a ghost - it is a spirit recently released from the body. That spirit hovers around in confusion for a while and all creatures with heightened awareness can sense it. I sensed the spirits of two of my cats, hours before I knew they had died. Later I knew they had just come to say goodbye to me. If I can do it, why can't animals? They are purer than I am!

Dogs don't get dementia that I know of. They do often sense things that aren't there, however. But it could be something mundane like a bat or bird or squirrel in the attic or on the roof as well.

Yes they do, but after reading some of the other answer, I don't feel the explanation would be understood by the masses.
Besides, there are many other things that go bump in the night, other than spirits. Look up "shadow people" sometime.

Definitely, my dog always seems to know when I've spilled whiskey in the living room, and before I have a chance to get some kitchen paper to clean up the mess he arrives in and does the job for me. Good boy!
