Salix (willows) are susceptible to numerous canker diseases. Look these up and compare your symptoms. Black Canker (Physalospora miyabeana), Cytospora Canker (Cytospora chrysosperma), Leaf Blight (Venturia saliciperda). Less likely, but still possible: Botryosphaeria dothidea, Cryptodiaporthe salicina, Cryptomyces maximus, Discella carbonacea, Diplodina, or Macrophoma. No matter which fungus is the inoculum, pruning and removing dead branches, and spraying with a manganese or zinc based fungicide 3-4 times when the leaves begin to emerge in the spring will offer the best control.

Well, geez, this question was just more fun than a barrel of monkeys. It isn't often that you see one with so much action in this category. I'm glad I stopped in. Since I'm here I may as well throw in my two cents worth. A) I WANT YOUR GARDEN!!! (Sorry, I got carried away.) B) You have room for Weeping Willows and if the sycamore didn't scare you I think you also have the confidence. That wall pic is really something so if you still want a rooty m.f.'ing tree I say go for it. C) As far as maintenance they don't need a lot. If they start growing some really ugly way cut it off. After a few times they get the message and shape up. I'm not being facetious either. They will suck up all available water so if you have a wet spot that is far from any domicile pick that. If the only wet spot is close to your residence let the tree suffer. It'll probably be fine anyway. They are remarkably resilient. Congrats, I guess, though the person above me has thrown the stability of your relationship into question. Your choice of trees and her comment do beg the question, why weeping? Is everything OK? Are you crying out for help? Do you plan on dumping the house on him and having the willows eat his sewer alive? Is this some diabolical long-range plot to wish misery on future generations in a family home because of the injustices you have suffered at his hands? Do you desire a symbolic living monument to the agonies you have endured? I'm kidding. I think. Plant the dern willows and enjoy. Cheers!

If it is this kind of fungus (see links) your tree could be in trouble. The fungus may have entered the heart of the tree and no amount of spray or removal will help. If you want to be sure, you should seek the advice of a qualified tree surgeon.

You need to get yourself a garden sprayer with a canister attachment to distribute another liquid. Fill the canister with Lemon Joy and spray the tree liberally with the solution. This should help you get rid of the fungus and will not hurt the tree. It worked on one of my maple trees and on both of my apple trees. Good Luck!
