refer to its manual. if it didn't come with one (but it should've) it should atleast have a disk to install the driver.
Also before you start make sure you have a drive bay available. Also Make sure your motherboard will still have a port for you to plug it into, and also make sure your Power supply on your dell still has available plugs for the drive. If the DVD drive requires a audio out make sure your sound card has a plug fro and audio in.
ALSO BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE MAKE SURE THE POWER IS UNPLUGED.
This help will work only on Windows XP Service Pack 2!!

1. open your dell (so that you could see the inside parts) Note: it should say how to remove the case in its manual,if i knew which dell i can tell you how.
2. when you bought the DVD drive it should of came with screws to hold it in place.
3. look on the front of the CPU box and try to find out where to install the DVD drive. If you need to remove some metal or a plastic casing refer to your manual if you are not sure on how to remove it ,but it should be easy to remove.
4.Put the drive in place and look for a place to screw it in and make sure its in well and wont fall off.
5. Check which type of connection it uses for the motherboard. if its a modern one its most likely a ATA (aka IDE) or PATA (parallel ATA) for old drives.
6.Plug the power in to the drive.
7.Now turn on the computer.
8. when you log on windows XP will detect the new drive (if you installed it correctly.)
9. Click on it.
10. it will bring up a screen asking to install the new hardware.
11. Insert the Disk that came with it into the original drive. (your stock computer drive.)
12.on the install new hardware window click: install automaticly (recomended)
13. It will search for the right drivers in the original computer's drive.
14. After it is installed check that it says installation is successful.
15. if it asks to restart then restart your computer.
Only do this if the install new hardware didn't show up:
16. Click start
17.Controll pannel.
18.Add new hardware.
19. then follow steps 11-15.
20. If it asks to restart then restart.

Its very easy. Just open the computer case, loosen the screws for the drive, unplug the cables and remove the existing CD drive and put the DVD in its place replacing all of the cables, screws, etc.. Its a very hard thing to screw up.
