Unions use "collective bargaining" which means that they have the power to pressure the company into things which an individual could not. Unions are responsible for safer working conditions, mandatory breaks, living wages, benefits, and other things.

However, unions can abuse their power. When they demand more of a company than it can afford to give, that hurts both the company and the employees.

I've worked at companies that weren't unionized where workers weren't given bathroom breaks, couldn't take lunch breaks, were forced to work in dangerous conditions without proper safety precautions, were fired for tiny infractions.

But I prefer to work at a company which treats its employees well without being forced by a union.

I am not an office worker, but when we unionized, we brought them with us. The situation at that point was untenable and they needed the protection from the union as much as the rest of us. Bless the office workers, don't blame them. They need the money as much as we do and they work as hard (or harder) than we do. Unless you are the sole owner of a company, it's not your money anyway.

I've usually found that unions exist at different companies because of poor/bad managment and their policies,,:-)=
