"The national government will maintain and defend the foundations on which the power of our nation rests. It will offer strong protection to Christianity as the very basis of our collective morality. Today Christians stand at the head of our country. We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit. We want to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theatre, and in the press — in short, we want to burn out the poison of immorality which has entered into our whole life and culture as a result of liberal excess during the past years.”

it is from a hitler speech from the late 1930s. congrats to those who guessed it, your pretty smart and certainly understand nazi germany at a sophisticated level. i love this quote because if you clean it up with the proper language of the times, it is essentially what many on the right think today. hmm, in retrospect, it is quite obvious that this sort of hateful and divisive thinking is a pretty bad thing. i hope, and i'm confident, that things will turn out better this time around. but, unless we all pay attention and think, there are of course no guarantees.

No. And I would strongly suggest to anyone reading this to read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, by William L. Shirer.

Then get busy working to overthrow the existing Congress in November.

I want to know who said that. I disagree with it. I think that some of the changes in our people due to 'liberal excess' are fantastic, and progress towards helping those who can't help themselves, tolerance, learning and science, while small right now, are very very good and a positive thing for our species, let alone our country. I think now it is very important to keep 'separation of church and state' at the forefront of our minds. Christianity is just a religion, and no better than any other (just ask any of them, you will always get 'we are better than the others' so why not all of them be equal?), so it should not get any special treatment in this country that is one of the most culturally cosmopolitan in the world. Cultural mixing enlightens us and our morals. Yes, something is lost. Intolerance, ignorance of other people, and isolation is lost. Losing things that make us feel safe and powerful are always difficult, but even in the short term, as in one generation, the benefits are myriad and far-reaching. In the long term, they are priceless and integral for our development as a species and movement towards peace and understanding between everyone.

The power of our nation comes from the Constitution. Christianity does not need to be defended. If it cannot stand on it's own, then it shouldn't. There is no need to fill our culture up with Christianity, it never left. Immoral poison has not entered my life, so I will skip the book burning.

It's also Christians that voted our most illustrious leader into the Whitehouse... I mean I have spoken with quite a few and they are in complete of the War in Iraq... the war in Lebanon... I mean golly gosh gee without the Christians where would we be...? I was watchin' an infomercial and Christians were back to smacking people on the forehead to heal them... truly amazing grace... Excelsior...!

Sounds like the sort of thing that would have been very popular in Germany about 70 years ago.

I don't agree with the sentiment, but don't deny that it's a valid opinion for someone to hold.

People are entitled to their personal opinions. That's what the Constitution is all about. People are not entitled to force their personal opinions on everyone else as a matter of law.

That's also what the Constitution is all about.

I don't agree with it and it sounds like something Adolf Hitler would say to convince Germans to hate the Jewish. It reeks of intolerance.

NO! BUT people should realize that America was founded on Judea-Christian beliefs and to respect those values. We do not need to change our way of life JUST because you are OFFENDED. If you are offended - get over it and quit whining to liberal judges and groups to change our system. We have many freedoms the biggest MISCONCEPTION seems to be that there is a RIGHT NOT TO BE OFFENDED. Being offended comes with having FREE SPEECH. Worship whatever Gods you want to JUST don't expect me to remove our god from Federal, State and Local municipalities. AND don't expect god to be removed form our currency. Christianity is here to stay and be glad we have forgiveness something that seems to be lacking in a religion such as islam.

I think we should follow that. Although it will be impossible to make everyone here moral. Unfortuantely no one will have the guts to attempt it. Even if I was president it would still be impossible.
