I know in one sense it refers to someone who's not signed to a big record label, but what's the other meaning?

I know the meanings you're giving me, but what does the music sound like that goes by the GENRE "indie"?

These are artists that are on an independent label. Hence the nickname "indie"!

As I have read many peoples answers, indie does not just mean independent lable. Over time, many more bands became experimental. Indie eventually became a genre (to most). It ranges anywhere from pop to shoegazing, and sadcore to heavy. I consider myself an indie band fan. To me, indie is kinda of weird. I say this because the bands all sound the same, and yet entriely different and unique at the same time. People may not agree, but that is how I feel.

Indie music like from India? That's under world music in the U.S.

Otherwise Indie music is stuff that's not on the pop charts. It could be any style of music. If a pop band (especially those one hit wonders) is still playing music, but isn't on the charts, they are back to being indie.

essentially, you're right, indie means independant - i.e. no record label. But over time, indie is grown to mean music that is not part of the mainstream. The term is now used to describe any genre of music that is not part of its more commercial counterparts.

It means independent.. although today it is kinda used incorrectly since independent does'nt mean as much since almost anyone can produce and publish their own music.
