I have numerous snakes and have encountered this with a few of them. I believe it is because they are unhappy in some way shape or form. With my snakes it is usually their diet, they want to be fed more or something different. Be careful tho', if you feed your ball something different like say a gerbil instead of his usual rat, they may decide that is all they want.

a better way to go then a bath is to get some of the coco husk beading and put about an inch of it in a appropriately sized Tupperware container. fill the container with about an in or so of water just so it barley goes over the bark. give the container a few air holes and leave the snake in there for the better part of a day. Make sure that the temps where you have the container are in the mid 80's and by the end of the day most of the shed should have come off.

to ice cutie.. if the snakes skin has started coming off then yes its ready to shed.

I use a plastic lidded container with damp shagnum moss. Cut a hole in the lid so the snake can get in and out of it. This makes a great humid hide that will help them shed.
