Oh about twenty some years ago, IBM came out with the pc and at that time it was private technology. It wasn't until they started creating clones of this technology that the market changed. It is because of this is the major difference between Apple and PCs. Apple though it has gained more support for third party software and hardware vendors, it is still private and thus some parts aren't as readly available to the consumer and can cost more.
Depending on your use will affect if you want a Mac or PC. Macs have been very efficient when it comes to graphics rendoring, video and music. Adobe I believe originally wrote its code specifically for Macs and then it opened to PC support. If you want more software and hardware support , you'll tend to stick to Windows. Doesn't mean that you'll won't find tons of opensource or stuff for Macs but it tends to be easier to find PC support. Also lately since Intel is supplying the CPUs for Macs, universally supported software will be more available.
Lastly, don't be misguided that Macs do not have their weaknesses in the software or that viruses cannot attack it. Though it is significantly less, it isn't impossible. Windows recieves more attacks because there are more Windows users and Windows has more poorly designed components open by default to be backwards compatible. Not that they shouldn't be closed, it just the Microsoft figured not everyone has Windows XP compatible software and keeping them open, it leads to more security back doors than Macs. For this reason BSD (Unix variance, not Linux) , which the Mac Os is based off of is more stable, because less options are open by default and with a smaller userbase it is easier to correct problems and distribute them as a whole.

I'm a Mac person, I use them at work and at home, so I'm a little bias, ok a lot.
PCs are the most common machine out there, Windows is a very standard operating system but there are many viruses and glitches that are found with windows. Microsoft puts out patches all the time and if you have virus software it should be updated fairly often. PCs are very good word processors and have on ok graphical interface, they can be very powerful and good for doing many tasks.
Macs are extremely user friendly, they have very simple comands and can be learned very quickly. They are great for graphics and any web deisgner or graphic designer should use a mac (but check their work on a pc). They can have many of the same programs, like word or excel, they also have their own iWork program that some people like and others don't. The people at Apple have always been very friendly and helpful whenever we have had problems. Macs don't get viruses, because to add anything to your computer you have to put in your password. They are more expensive but only by a little any more, the base model iMac is very powerful and has just about everything you need and is just a few hundred dollars more than a Dell. Macs can be very long lived, many PCs have to be replaced after 3 or 4 years, macs can easily last 8 and some are over 10, (We actually are using upgraded computers that came out over 12 years ago at work, but they are starting to get old and cranky).
That is all I can think of right now, I think PCs are fine for most people but Macs are the way to go.

We just switched from Windows to Mac OSX. It took me a little bit to get used to it, but I love it! The reason we switched was because we kept having so much trouble with spyware on the Windows PC's. Macs don't get a lot of spyware or viruses. People don't write a lot of viruses for Macs because there aren't so many Macs as Windows and also Macs seem to have better protection from all that stuff too. We're very happy with ours. I have the Mac OS X Tiger. If you get that one I highly recommend purchasing a book called Mac OSX Tiger Edition The Missing Manual. It has answered all my questions except one, I believe. Apple has a discussion forum where users help each other find answers to questions and I got the answer to the question I couldn't find in the missing manual there. Between the book and the website you can do anything. Also the Apple support line is excellent.
One thing I've noticed is that there aren't as many games for Mac as Windows. But I have found games to put in mine and the two games that came with it are fun. One called Nanosaur has some awesome graphics.

I use macs for over ten years and have always been happy, I always hear people complain about windows based machines
The only thing I ever hear people moan about macs is that the gaming thing. But that's what Playstations are for, Ever since OS X came out in 2001 it is a pure joy to use, and apple keep upgrading every 18 months to 2 years and the upgrades are always better than expected. You get a lot of software with the mac such as iMovie, iPhoto and iWeb, theres a lot you can do and it's not very complicated go check out http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/ , there you will find a preview of their upcoming upgrade to the OS .

The only difference between IBM-compatible computers and Macs were the fact that the hardware used was completely different, and therefore the software. But now, since Macs now have Intel processors, we are able to run XP and other windows OS's. Theoretically, Macs and PC's have the same capabilities, it's only that the OS is completely different that you basically need to re-write an XP program for it to work on MacOS. I would say Macs are better as a whole, because you don't require nearly as much memory as a Windows XP computer, and CPU power.

in case you basically use your pc for music, video clips, %., and archives- a mac would be super. Macs do have a solid interface and are ok outfitted. a computing gadget could be greater proper if your going to be doing an excellent sort of artwork on the pc- as desktops do an excellent sort of issues macs cant. desktops are in hassle-free terms fairly low fee whilst fashions with each and every of a similar specs are in comparison, yet desktops could have custom hardware- to cost under macs and nonetheless do what you decide on. You mentioned that money isnt a super concern nevertheless, so I advise utilising a mac. i'm a computing gadget guy myself, yet a mac could greater proper fit your subject.

Well Mac computers use proprietary parts/operating system ......and becoze of that MAC computers &computers parts has higher prices than PC ones.....and can run only about 20% of games/software on the market today.
On the other side there are hundreds of hardware/software manufacturing companys for PCs .....so all prices are lover and like user u can chose from a HUGE offer on the market(and this is all that REALLY matter to me).
If you wanna know more.....
Feel free to contact me on yahoo messenger for more details.
