I have heard that Mondays are bad days, in that people have the woes of the week ahead of them, so candidates tend to interview less well, and employers are more critical than they might ordinarily be. Anybody aware of any empiriacl or anecdotal evidence to support this view?

I don't think the day of the week matters much. I think you're more likely to have most people's attention in the morning rather than the afternoon, and I think Friday afternoon would be particularly tough. People have mentioned that you want to be either first or last to interview, with which I absolutely agree.

I believe that the best thing to do on a job interview is listen very intently and actively and drive the conversation where you want it to go but in the context of the interviewer's questions. That's sometimes a tricky skill to develop, but a good one. Read the book "Crucial Conversations" for some ideas on how to navigate high-stakes discussions.

In my experience, it isn't always the day that gives the best interview. To either be among the first to interview (to set the standard others would have to follow), or among the last (to really be the bright spot at the end of the process) seems to work well.

Mind you, it helps if you are a truly qualified candidate that can express yourslef adequately... but that should be obvious.

I would agree with you about having a whole week ahead and stuff from the weekend on their desk. The one thing I think also, is that if someone was to be fired, it would happen on a Friday, and if you get hired you could start on a Monday and get a full work week in. If you were hired on a Monday, there would be 4 days left in the week.

It depends on when they start interviewing. If they start interviewing on a Wednesday, it is Wednesday. The best day is the first possible day. You set the good example first that makes everyone try to compete with you, and they'll remember the first and last people better than everyone in the middle.

The day doesn't matter, but I think just after lunch is the best time.
