It isn't good for anything.

The creatures we descended from had five digits per limb. When we're developing, a gene puts out the signal "grow digits now-- five per" (though in some people the genes are corrupted, and those people can get 6 toes on a foot).

Similar critters with other numbers of digits per happened to have died out.

It's a mistake to take every part or characteristic and ask "what's it for?" as many characteristics are side-effects, or leftovers, or for other reasons were not specifically selected for.

Seems unlikely to me that "evolution will make it disappear" since there's no advantage to it. That is, people who have a mutation in their genes that leaves it off wouldn't be more successful survivors/procreators than those with it. And even if they were, we're so widespread and numerous, that characteristic wouldn't take over.

Balance and to change directions while running.

No. Evolution has nothing to do with little toes.

all your toes are used for balance even the little toe if you didnt have one they would have to put a weight in your shoe so you could keep your balance

Well I wouldn't want to do without my little toe. If it weren't good for something it wouldn't be there so I think it serves a purpose.

you need it to balance, besides, it's the cutest of all the toes!
why would you want the poor little guy to disappear - what's it ever done to you?!lol

Balance. When you walk you use your toes to make sure you don't fall to one side or the other. If our feet were completly connected we would have trouble standing/walking.

To Say Hello

To cry wee-wee-wee all the way home. (Balance is the scientific answer. It's useful, so why would evolution get rid of it?)

little toes are good for making you mess up on your nailpolish.

mine's practically not there, so i guess i'm more evolved than most people.
