No. I did a lot of research on the subject. I've had one since January of this year.
They are a wonderful choice that has been very popular in many countries for a long time. Their popularity in the US has been on the rise.
If you've had a child then they are perfect. Otherwise your cervix opening might be small and the insertion will hurt.
In the US there are only 2 kinds - one that is 5 years and one that is 10 years. The 5 year one is best if you have heavy painful periods - it will make your periods light. The 10 year one is good if you already have light periods, it may make your periods go away (and it's okay according to doctors if this happens.)

When you want another child you go back to the doctor and they take it out and you are Instantly fertile again. And my husband hasn't noticed it or the string at all.
I have this one:

I choose it because I've always had painful periods, I can never remember to take the pill at the same time everyday, I have lots of bleeding between my periods on the pill, I am tired of all the strong hormones the pill has in it and the pill is not good for breastfeeding moms.

Sally is correct about how the IUD works. It prevents implantation of an egg that's already fertilized so IF you get pregnant while you're using it, it's like an abortion from the pro-life perspective... The way my doctor explained this to me was to say that there is only a 20% chance you'll get pregnant if the circumstances are perfect... so while you might get pregnant every now and then, the implantation does not occur, so the pregnancy doesn't get past a certain stage, and you pretty much never know you were pregnant in the first place.
And on another note... take it from someone who is one of those 'it won't happen to me' people...
.08% of the population has a perforation problem with their IUD...
I am one of the .08% - mine perforated my uterus and I had to have it surgically removed. It caused permanent, irreversible damage and I had to get my tubes tied to prevent future pregnancies because my uterus and vaginal wall were so damaged from the stupid thing. The perforation of my uterus was a more painful experience than feeling the doctor cut me open for a c-section. I'd much rather feel them cut me open again than go through the pain pain PAIN of that stupid IUD poking around my insides.
I wish I would have chosen something else. Now I'm unable to have more children because of my choice of an IUD.
Granted, this only happens to VERY FEW... but you never know - it could be you. Just thought you might want to hear it from the other side before you make your decision.
(I feel like I need to clarify that I'm not trying to scare you out of getting the IUD. I'm just representing that 'other side' of it. I feel like you need to know that the bad stuff does happen to some people... This is not something to take lightly. IUD may work great for you. It's a personal decision and if you want to try it, I say go for it... just know that there's that SLIM SLIM SLIM chance that it might not work for you.)
Best wishes, whatever you decide. :)

the newer designed IUDs are much safer and can be kept inside you without complications for up to 10 years... however... you will be more prone to infections and more sensitive to new partners... they are recommended for those who are in a monogamous relationship only. also there is a small chance that they can become imbedded and the tissue of your uterus will actually grow around it making extraction a little more difficult and painful if you keep it for more than a few years.
talk to your doctor about it.
on a side note... my brother and i were both conceived while our mother had an IUD... that was over 25 yrs ago and i'm sure they work much better now... but they are not 100% effective.

I had IUDs between all 4 of my pregnancies. This was many years ago, but even then, I had NO trouble with them. You never know it's there. A tiny thread hangs out - you wouldn't mistake it for a tampon string.
A previous answer reported a .08 chance of perforation. That's only 8 out of 1000 (did I do the math right?) Very low odds. I highly recommend them!

IUD's are great! Like 30 years ago there was an IUD that caused lots of its patients to get endometritis, but none of the current ones do. IUD's are hassle-free, provide great protection from pregnancy, and allow resumption of fertility upon removal. Also, they're all generic now so they're relatively cheap.

well i hear that the ones now adays are plastic. so they should be alright. my mother had one when they were made of something else, back in the 70's . she didnt get pregnant for 5 years, work like a charm, only, after it came out my mom had 2 more kids with in the next few years, both of her her sons, my brothers, had problems with chemical imbalance their whole lives.i personally think it was the iud that caused this.

FYI They do not prevent pregnancy they terminate it! It egg becomes fertilized and goes into the uterous and because of the IUD, you have a very early miscarriage.
