me and my mom went to albertsons yesterday to get $160.00 in money orders. we bought some scratch tickets at the same time and while our money orders were printing we went over to the side of the counter to scratch the tickets. we were so upset when we lost we walked away without grabbing our money orders. when we realized this we went back and the girl was already off work. so they called her and she said she gave them to us but we know for sure she didnt. we finally talked to a manager and he said he would check the servalence tapes. so we called back this morning and the manager said they couldnt see anything because the camera was facing the wrong angle. we dont know what to do. that was our bill money and without it we cant pay our bills. please give me some advice on what to do. albertsons isnt helping us at all and we really need our money.

The security cameras weren't face a cash transaction area? That's suspicious and really is not reasonable.

I'm not sure how your store was set up, but surely there are cameras ALL OVER THE PLACE. If you received the MO, the security tapes from other parts of the store should show you handling the MO.

I would go back and ask to speak a manager above the manager you spoke to. Dress in business attire and have a man come with you (I'm presuming you are ladies). The guy doesn't need to say anything, he's more for a show of strength. Take a pad of paper, ask for the manager's name and for the correct spelling of his name. Take notes during the meeting. Take quotes if you want. Have the manager give you the transaction number for the money order AND the money order number. Tell them you are pursuing your rights to collect the money order monies through Albertson's and with the money order company. Tell him that you WILL determine who who cashed the money order. Don't let him pooh-pooh you, this information is available to him and probably as a term of the money order company agreement he must provide the information to you if asked.

When you meet with the manager, don't be accusatory and don't point fingers. Tell him that you are sure that he would like to get to the bottom of the problem just like you would. If all else fails at this point, tell him that you will be following up with corporate and let them know exactly what he told you and that you are sure that they will be very interested to know the security camera was not covering a cash transaction area.

When you get home, send a copy of the letter and ask him specifically to save a copy of the security tapes for that day for the whole store and detail what you talked about and who was there during the meeting. (This puts him on notice that he can't destroy/tape over the evidence.) Send two copies of the letter to him, one by regular mail and one by certified mail. Be sure to put at the bottom of his letter "cc: Corporate Office". Do a little internet hunt and find the name/address of the corporate office and send them a copy of the letter with a short cover letter explaining your problem.

If your meeting with the manager doesn't get your money back on the spot, then you will need to contact the money order company. The MO company can track if the MO was cashed and (probably for a small fee to you) provide you with a copy of the back of the endorsed money order. You will need to pursue the transaction from there depending on what is on the back of the money order.

If it takes you an hour to get all this done, think of it as a way of making $160.00 an hour. Wouldn't we all like to be able to do that .... :)

Good Luck.

Thats a tough one there.. the only thing that could have happened was that the cashier probably put the money orders on the counter near you while you were scratching the lottery tickets. She figured you would see them as she was taking the next customer. And sometime between the time she could have put them on the counter for you and the time you left, anyone could have picked them up.

I would go back to the store and approach the cashier and ask her if she gave them to you in your hand or if she sat them on the counter. If she did indeed give them to you and you inquire as to how she gave them to you, she might be able to tell you something that will jog the memories of either you or the cashier.

I know many times I have been in situations where I have asked for something that someone claimed that they gave me even though I was sure that they didn't. So after talking to them and going over the events of the transaction, I have often learned that they did in fact give me the item and because I was so preoccupied with something else that I unconsciencely took what they gave me and put it in a "safe place" that I ended up forgetting about.

This is your fault, I'm sorry that you lost your money, but you should've been more careful than that. If the security tapes can't help you really have no evidence that you didn't get the money orders. That's why you should use checks.

BTW, to the person under me it wouldn't be able to be traced back to them unless they had the receipt. A money order is like cash, so if you lose it it's lost.

Sorry to say but you and your Mom were of course absent-minded and perhaps stupid too but it is absolutely atrocious that the person who attended to you should have behaved the way she did! You should report the matter to the police immediately and if they are sincere, they should be able to bring out the truth. Good luck in your efforts. Hope you succeed and get back your money. Of course, it is likely the deceitful person will be punished under the law. By the way, this should be a lesson for you to be extra-careful in future!
