They are stars. They generate energy. The purpose we use them for is light and navigation, and something to study. If there are planets with life around the stars, those people may use them for the same purpose.

Your question borders on philosophical rather than scientific. By that I mean, your question is not too unlike "What is the meaning of life?" Philosophers and lay people alike could spend centuries discussing this one without ever coming to a consensus.

Stars do provide a means for navigating the oceans at night. An instrument called the sextant can be used to work out where the observer is on Earth.

As a simple example, the so-called North Star is called that because no matter where we are in the northern hemisphere of Earth its direction is always nearly north. Thus, I know I am south of the north pole. So if north is the direction I want to go, I can just keep heading towards that star. Using a sextant can fix a position on Earth much more precisely than this example.

Because of new technologies like GPS and even old ones like LORAN, celestial navigation (using the stars) has become a thing of the past. That's a good thing for me because when I took the final exam for celestial navigation in college I calculated my position to be in the middle of the Sahara Desert. That would have been OK except for the fact I was supposed to be on a ship.

Purpose of Stars
1. it emits light thru chemical process (nuclear fussion) .Light is energy...and this source of energy is the source of all life force

2. formation of stars are usually a system of planets which revolves around it, like the Solar system.Thus...once again...stars provide what we have

3. stars have gravitational forces...pulling each other...keeping everything balance...so everything wont fall apart lol

4. they are great, free tools for fortune teller... hehe

Well...i guess in short... purposes of stars for human beings are too diversified to mention here.

Just take a look at how humans appreciate stars.
Before renaissance...stars are navigational tools, calender, and so on.
When science kicks in after renaissance, the way humans think of stars change; instead of "using" stars, we try to learn more about them.

The true purposes of the existance of the stars should not be judged by anyone at all except for stars themselves.

It's just like human.Noone knows u better than yourself.

So...let's leave it to the stars to answer this question

They need no purpose. Like an appendix. They are a result of gas conditions in space. The sun is a star, and lights, and heats the earth. Without it, we would not be here.

Stars manufacture elements. The Big Bang gave us a lot of hydrogen and a little helium. The other 90 elements are made in stars. They also provide us with heat, light, stable planetary orbits, and interesting things in the night sky.

Whether they have an agenda of their own is beyond the scope of this forum.

to remind us a) that beauty can exist in darkness as well, b) that we are not alone; somewhere out there among the stars someone else is looking at our sun and thinking of who else might be out there, c) that we are very small in the grand scheme of things and we should not behave as if we are the most important creation of God, d) all those other worlds are really far and we would never reach any of them in this lifetime so we must preserve the world we have here and not destroy it with pollution and nuclear war because then we would have nowhere to escape.

What is the purpose of our existence?Come to think of it wat is the purpose of anything???We exist coz we do and so is the case with evrything else!!!!! No science can prove nor provide a specific and precisely accurate answer to many questions like de origin of life and earth, the galaxy and de universe!!!!!We could speculate and assume but never be certain.

There is a gravitational pull between all objects in the universe and this holds the universe and all that is in it in place and keeps us where we are.
