Without getting into the pros and cons of the issue, the key point is that an election on an issue cannot occur in the US. Contrary to a lot of people's beliefs, many school textbooks, and various media, the US is not a democracy. It is a Republic. Just think a minute - "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States and to the REPUBLIC for which..."; "The Battle Hymn of the REPUBLIC" - and so on.

A direct vote on an issue would be a true democracy. But in a Republic, you vote for the people who vote on the issues. There's one of those coming up this November.

The elected officials of Iraq make the policy and decisions, kinda like our gov. does. That's kinda like saying why we haven't had a popular vote to decide the same thing. Our elected officials make the tough decisions. Since our officials as well as Iraq's have made choices, (answer to your question)- we elected our government to represent us and make these decisions for us. So have the Iraqi people; therefore they have voted to have us there. Just as we as a people have voted to be there by electing our government. In all fairness; we would have to be at the poles everyday to vote if we made popular votes for everything. That is why we elect reps. A lot of people don't see that bottom line and don't take voting seriously. When it comes down to the line, we have chosen these people to make the hard calls for us.
Hope this answers what you're asking.

What coxteacher has said is just not the case, and he posted his lengthy screed so fast that it is undoubtedly canned and pasted. Polls of Iraqis have shown that the vast majority want the US troops out. I will post a link shortly when I find it.

Didn't find that link, but here's what the troops say about staying the course. If the troops were to vote, they would vote to leave:

"Released: February 28, 2006

U.S. Troops in Iraq: 72% Say End War in 2006

* Le Moyne College/Zogby Poll shows just one in five troops want to heed Bush call to stay “as long as they are needed”
.....
"An overwhelming majority of 72% of American troops serving in Iraq think the U.S. should exit the country within the next year, and more than one in four say the troops should leave immediately,"

More than 40,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed as the result of military intervention in their country. If President Bush wants to bring democracy to Iraq, he'd better hurry up, while there are still enough people 'alive' to be able to vote.

Because Bush only acknowledges the vote of the people when he agrees with the result. This is well established.

When the polls say he's doing something right, he constantly references them. When the polls disagree with him, he says he doesn't pay attention to the polls.

Hamas was elected as the majority party. Bush said he doesn't care, because he doesn't recognize the vote as valid. It's selective amnesia. He can't see anything that he doesn't agree with.

You answered your own question. We are occupiers, there to look after our own interests, including but not limited to oil. The US government cares little what the people of Iraq want. I was among those who believed we were on a mission to save the people of Iraq when we first went there, believing the lies. I won't get fooled again.

In many ways this upcoming election in November IS about our governments direction and the war in Iraq. No one disputes that we have to fight terrorists, but many disagree that Iraq was part of that plan!

The trouble is, will we get off our computers and sofas long enough to go vote? The direction of government can be changed, but only if we collectively get off our duffs and vote!

If the elected government of Iraq asked us to leave then we would. Since those officials were elected then I guess we did have an election to see if we stay or leave. And really, do you know anyone from Iraqi? How do you know they want us to leave? They want safety and freedom to do their business. They know right now that we are necessary over there to help them attain that.

That is what the US is trying to do. Help set up a government so the people can vote. The insurgents are the ones trying to stop the vote process.

Wow, can you imagine the turnout for that one. All the terrorists side-by-side with the peace loving people standing in line together. Logistically, it would be difficult to pull off and I would guess even many of the peace loving people want us out of there because their lives are so disrupted. It would be one way to get us home, but they would be cleaning the blood off the streets for a long time after those people finish standing in line together.
