Yes, it is possible to connect the two machines on a home network if the older machine has an ethernet socket (larger style phone socket type) but I doubt if it would be worth it, depending on the size of the storage available on the machine and the network speed it is capiable of, a usb or external drive may be better.
If however you do want to go ahead, I would need to know if and what if any connection to the internet you have, and how you connect - ie usb or router.
If on a router then it would probably have a inbuilt DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) which would alleviate half of the battle, leaving you only to get the machines on the same workgroup (right click on My Computer and check out the Properties page) and set up a network share.
If you do not have a DHCP router then you will need to manually enter IP (internet protocol) addresses and subnet masks etc.
In short, entirely possible but is it worth it unless you can do it quickly, maybe some external storage on the new pc that you can move stuff of the old one on to would be better, certainly use less electric and much faster and easier.

dear fellow member,
Peer to Peer sharing. You'd have to make your Win98 have the same login as your Windows XP username and password. It gets a bit complicated. If you want more information just msg me and i'll reply later with details on how to set it all up with your current scenario without spending any extra money. Just buy an external hard drive storage and hook it up via Firewire or USB port for all your storage needs. Your old computer cannot handle the amount of videos you need to download from today's standards anyways. You'll hear your old PC grind a lot and it will take time to transfer since chances are your network card on your old computer is a very older generation one.
Kind Regards,
Ben

Probably be better use to move the hard drive out of the old PC and into your new one has a second drive. Then you could delete Windows off it and use the whole thing for files, rather than just the left over. Also would be faster.
But if you want to connect the two PCs, buy a router (if you want both to have Internet access) or a hub (if you just want to share files)

Possible it is; but worth the effort is in question. Hey: I sounded like Yoda there....cool!! You probably would do better organizing the pictures for burning on a CD and doing that (with backup copies made). Once you've burned the pics to CD, simply delete them from your newer PC's hard drive.
You can still use the "old" PC to run it's dated games and for various word processing use.
But if you still want to connect the two, I suggest using a router....but again, will that be worth all the effort???

You can connect the 2 PCs through a crosss-over cable. Give IP address for each PC. Then create a folder in your old PC and make it shared for network users. This folder will be the container of your files.

It would be possible but you would have to network the two machines and share the drive on the 98 machine. It would probably be easier to fit the hard drive in the new machine (if there is room).

Of course it is possible, doesnt matter how old it is as long as it works. Will have a small hardrive so not not much storage space.
If ut old machine has a usb port then easiest way is to a buy a USB - USB cable called a Bridged cable or USB networking cable.

Buy a memory stick and use it to move files between the old and the new computer... it's what I do and it works very well.
