There is no reason that you can't shampoo or clean shag carpet just like you would any other. The only problem is that it will take longer to dry. Matting can also make some of the areas particularly difficult to clean.

Treat them like you would any other.
Yes, you should know that steam (or hot water) type cleaners are actually bad for carpets! The heat disolves the glue backing of the carpet, then the fibers start to come out. Use cold water only. Most of the dirt you pullout is loose dirt anyway. If it's a loose carpet, try to hand it somewhere & squirt it w/ the hose. If it's wall-to-wall, use a carpet cleaner that doesn't heat the water.
Also, don't walk on wet carpets, the water actually cleans your feet & holds the dirt on the floor/carpet!
