What they eat natural is typically earthworms and garden slugs, but earthworms are preferred.
And just for the record it is Garter, not gardner snake. They were named after the fashionable garters that men used to wear to keep their socks up, it is just coincidence that the common Garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) has three yellow longitudinal stripes, just like one of the more poular models of garter at the time of thier naming!
The best thig to do would be to release it in the closest wood pile, and let it get back to nature, then there would be no worries about what to feed it, plus it is only fair for the animal to get back to the wild.

Your baby will happily eat all the earthworms you can feed it. Try offering 1-2 worms every other day. They also like small fish (minnows) & salamanders. Don't know why everyone says to feed them crickets & grasshoppers. Garter snakes aren't big insect eaters. After your snake grows a bit, try offering pinkie mice. I've raised 2 from birth to 4ft long on worms at first & then various sized mice. They are healthy as horses & never ate one bug or ever even tried to.

Feed it goldfish and about the feeding of the mid section. That isnt true. Midsections on snakes is often large and they cant eat something that big. Do not feed it anything bigger than 1 1/2 times its head. It has to open its mouth and how do you expect it to open it as wide as its stomach??

It really depends on what size your baby snake is. It's probably big enough to eat crickets, so go to your local pet store or catch them on the side of the house (if you haven't sprayed pesticides). If you find that crickets are too small, try pinky mice.

If you caught it.. PUT IT BACK.. if you bought it then earth worms, slugs, and guppies will make of its main diet most of its life. its tiny right now assuming its a baby) so go get about 5 guppies and put them in a small container with the snake. make sure the water is only about 1/2" deep and see if hes eating or not..

Baby garter snakes will eat small fish such as goldfish or guppies, small insects, and baby mice which have not yet opend their eyes. Whatever you feed it can not be larger than it's middle section, or else it will choke. Good luck!

baby crickets or grass hoppers. If you can catch some flys and pull their wings off, he will eat those. You should be able to go to the pet store and buy baby crickets. Pretty much any small insect.

Bugs...crickets...moths...flies...pinky mice. I wouldn;t keep it if I were you. They have a smell that stinks! Baby snakes are hard to take care of.
