We tried this when I was a kid.
But, my mother made us fill it in when it got 10 ft wide & we had to get a ladder to get in & out. We were doing it the smart way, making sure it was wide enough that it didn't fall in on us. She didn't care, she made us fill it in. But... we were running out of places to put the dirt anyway! :)

So.... I'd have an answer for you by now, if my mother hadn't stopped us!

Actually as you went closer and closer to the center of the earth you would be getting hotter and hotter. If you really could get to the middle intending to go the rest of the way to Australia, you would be incinerated to embers in the middle. Those embers won't have to worry about feet first or not.

Depending on which country you come from, there are easier ways to get to Australia.

You would think so, but how far up/down would you fall when you got through?
That's a bit deep really!
