Hello, I have a 96 Jetta and last night while I was about 40 miles from home it crapped out on me. I was going up a slight hill (in 4th gear) and it started sort of jerking forward and back on me, I thought mabye I was going too slow for 4th gear so I put it in 3rd, and it did the same thing. I had to pull over. I tried many times to start it, every time it idled very rough before it eventually died... What could be causing this? I tried starting it while my friends looked under the hood and they said they saw a spark, any ideas? Is this going to be very expensive to fix?? Thanks for your help.

Bring it to a trusted mechanic. I hate when any car jerks forward and back on me.

If your friend saw a spark under the hood it's spark plug wires. First make sure they're all plugged in. Sometimes they can come loose. If they are get an new set and do a tune up, plugs, cap and rotor if equipped and you should be good. A broken or shorting wire which would cause the spark would make the engine run very rough and lose a good deal of power.

find where the spark is and fix that, But it sounds like your car needs an oxygen sensor
