Hot Water will shrink a 100% cotton shirt (make it one size smaller then what you bought). If you bought a XL, it will then be a L size. If it's a cotton blend I'm not sure how much it will shrink, if any.
Other materials will not shrink, some may even stretch. Make sure you also read the tags before you wash them.
Dry on high heat, for about 30 minutes.

Use hot water but some fabrics will get damaged if you wash them with hot water. If the label says to wash cold, use cold water and put it in the dryer for a long time. The dryer shrinks too.

Use hot water if a white, cool water if a color and then dry on high heat. The temp of the water will only fade the color if not used correctly...it's the drying that shrinks the fabric.

Its depend on the materials...why do u want to shrink your shirt ..? some washing detergent too can shrink clothes. But if u think that u make the shirt over size..then u have to be extra careful selecting clothes before purchasing..make sure the size fit your..and the type of materials shrink, stay as it is or became over size after washing.

It's the drying, not the water that causes shrinkage. High heat!
