Israel is not at war with Lebanon. They are at war with the Syrian controlled Hezbollah terrorist militia group that has been allowed to freely operate in Lebanon by Lebanon's weak government. Hezbollah has directed repeated terrorist activity at Israel. In unprovoked attacks, Hezbollah has crossed over Israel's border, murdered and kidnapped Israeli citizens.

Hezbollah is a bunch of cowards that hide behind innocent women and children, so Israel has no choice but to fight them in Lebanon.

The conflict is between Israel and Hezbollah, a terrorist organization that operates out of Lebanon. Lebanon (as a country/government) is not involved, except as the location where the battle is being fought.

The cause is that Hezbollah was founded to destroy Israel, and has vowed to "wipe Israel off the face of the map".

The current conflict started when Hamas killed some Israeli soldiers and kidnapped others, then a few days later Hezbollah did the same thing. But Hezbollah made the mistake of going on to fire rockets at Israeli villages and cities, several hundred a day on average over the past month.

Because Lebanon (as a government) refused to stop Hezbollah from doing this, Israel had no choice but to strike back. Israel spent two weeks just doing airstrikes, all the while asking the UN and Lebanon to put troops on the ground in southern Lebanon to stop Hezbollah. When nobody else did anything, Israel finally sent troops across the border to pursue Hezbollah.

In 1948 the state of Israel was created by America and Britian. The fact that there were already people living there is what started the conflict. These people were forcibly relocated from their ancestrial homes.

In 1967 the "6 Day War" occurred, started by the dislocated palistinians and the supporting nations bordering Israel. This is when Israel started occupying Gaza and the West Bank, as well as all other Palestinian areas. There was a great exodus of Palistinians fleeing the distruction. When the war was over, Israel refused to let them back into the country. This is the "Right of Return" which is a sticking point in the negotiations. If Israel were to let the Palistinians return there would be an Arab majority in the government. To keep the Jews in control, they limit the number of non-jews who can participate in government.

Hezbolla is comprised of those displaced Palistinians wanting to return home. There has been a constant state of war and occupation since the inception.

The state of Israel has repeatedly violated UN resolutions in their dealings with the Palistinians. One of the main sticking points is the Jewish settlements in the West bank and Gaza. Their very building is considered illegal under international law as it is a means to lay claim to lands that do not rightfully belong to you.

The recent increase in violence is most likely related to the Israeli's treatment of the democratically elected Hamas government in the occupied territories. We pushed them to hold elections. When we didn't approve of who they put in office, we cut off food, electricity, and all money entering the occupied territories. Hezbolla, being themselve displaced Palistinians, is very sympathetic to the plight of those in the occupied territories. That is why they fire rockets into Israel.

The current flair up is in response to Hezbolla's capturing of 2 Israeli soldiers who crossed the border into Lebanon.

Hezbollah - who the Israelis are actually fighting - captured two soldiers and sparked off the escalation of the continuing conflict. It was always a little thing, but now Palestine is (more) peaceful it has suddenly been thrust to the fore with the kidnappings - and Isreal are getting very, very mad.

The lebanese army has been trying to keep out of the way - the other week when they got caught up, they lost a tank.
