I think it depends on the issue. Some more inflammatory issues can be detrimental to your personal and professional life if you publicly side on one side or the other.
That said, if you really believe in something, that shouldn't matter.

if you feel your right about something then by all means protest, its your right .as long as their is no violence

it depends on what you are protesting and if you can get other people to join you. you shouldn't protest something stupid or something that will never change.
