Some juvenile koi do look a lot like goldfish. In my experience, the koi tend to have a flatter belly and a more opaque tail than a standard goldfish would.

The barbels above would be another way to tell, but sometimes they're hard to see or broken off on a baby koi...

regular goldfish only cost a dollar or two,... you get them in any ordinary pet store.

Koi on the other hand, can cost as much as 10 dollars or more - each. These are available, only at a special request through a middleman, from a specialty pet store. Or directly from a Koi Breeder.

My grandfather used to raise Koi, and before he passed, his baby Koi would often sell for a few hundred each.

Koi's have a different look to them. And are bigger. They can get to 2-4 feet long.

Goldfish are typically smaller. There are a variety of them. Take a look at the links to tell the difference.

Koi and goldfish are 2 separate breeds.......and koi will have wiskers or barbels as they're called...try this site for better care for our fishes

A koi is bigger and also comes in diffrent colors.
