Someone defined it below, but it's a word I have never cared for personally. There was a time and place when ignorant (Caucasians) would use this word to describe certain African-Americans who apparently - in their racist views - didn't 'know their place".

So, for this reason, I steer clear of this word and its connotations, albeit that it was used in this pejorative context decades ago.
