Are they coming from someone with way too much time on their hands? ~or~ Did the cell phone companies start them so they could make money off of everyone forwarding them to everyone they know?

See, they come from other people, usually friends who know your number. They dial your number and then text in the letters in the words to the joke and send it to you. That's how it works.

i think most of my goofy friends got them from their goofy friends and so on and so on.... but yeah I just tell people I cant afford their stupid jokes and to email them to me instead.
