I have seen it done on some of the DIY decorating shows but I can't remember which ones

Place it against a wall and use plenty of decorative pillows as a back rest. By itself, the bed is too wide for comfortable sitting so the pillows will help with that.

Put the mattress high enough to be comfortable & against the wall, or in a daybed type frame. Put Lots-o-pillows at the back to bring the back of the couch out where it will be comfortable for people to sit.

Use fence finials or painted 4" x 4" blocks to raise a short frame to sofa height. place bed against wall and add a long bolster pillow or body pillow to the back to recreate a sofa back.

go to ChristopherLowell.com and see how he builds and pads a sofa back. very easy to take lesson from his dining banquet and make it a sofa.
I like your thinking and you'll like christopher"s repurposed furniture, also on www.hgtv.com a show called Decorating Cents does a lot of repurposed furniture.

Build a wood frame to go around it. Add padding to the top and front side to round it out, and upholster it. Either place it on a simple metal bed frame and put an uphostered "skirt" over it, or make legs out of wood. Buy lots of large throw pillows to use as your back cushions, and some accent smaller throws.

I'd make it look like a day bed, a few long pillows and a couple of square ones..
