Though years ago, I had many, MANY experiences with marching band and a little with colorguard. The weight of the flag combined with the many tosses and spins you do, could possibly contribute to arthritis or carpel tunnel in the wrists. But, if you do all of these moves correctly, you really should have no problem with your wrists in the future. I have many friends in colorguard in college (UGA Redcoat band...GO DAWGS!) and they have been doing flag and even weapons (rifles and sabers) since high school and have turned out just fine. As young as you are, I wouldn't worry about it all that much. If it really does worry you, then there are special made gloves specifically for colorguard that you can wear that support your wrists. Ask your instructors or band director about this; I am sure they have many catalogs for colorguard equipment! I hope this has helped a bit...good luck, and most importantly, have fun in your first show!

Wait till you are whipping those flags around in a strong wind. I had a friend break her arm while doing a routine in 35 mile an hour wind when I was a kid. And I've personally sent two guys to hospital for stitches when my flag got away from me.most of the pressure of snapping the flags sharply depends on movements of the wrist and elbow.

You're twirling a flag a lot, your wrist WILL get tired and mess up possibly. Plus, you could accidentally drop a flag on it and it would hurt really bad.

Good Luck with your show!

Because, over time, all the flag twirling and spinning that you use your wrists for will start ot affect your wrists. It could cause carpal tunnel syndrome.
