i thought that Stephen Hawkins thought of the big bang theory on a train. I'm not sure if JK Rowling thought of her Harry Potter books on a train. Any others??

Dunno about Hawkins, but:

"On a train journey from Cambridge to London, en-route from a conference to see the play Copenhagen, three physicists Neil Turok, Paul Steinhardt and Burt Ovrut were discussing M Theory and the origin of the universe. What would happen if there was more than one membrane? What happens if they collide? Result, one Big Bang. No more singularity, no more broken equations. We have a (possible) explanation of how it all began." (Ref. 1)

"Everyone knows the song “America the Beautiful,” but not everyone knows that it was inspired by Katharine Lee Bates’ 1890s trip in the cog railway to the pinnacle of Pikes Peak. You too can board the world’s highest cog railroad and travel 14,110 feet to its summit. The entire trip is 8.9 miles long and takes about three hours. Inspiration comes standard with this trip, as it undoubtedly did for Miss Bates." (Ref. 2)

"According to the official legend, Mickey Mouse was the result of a brilliant burst of inspiration, which struck Walt Disney during a train ride from New York to Los Angeles. In New York, he'd just seen his popular character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, hijacked by his distributor and farmed out to another animation outfit. By the time he arrived in Hollywood, he was ready to roll with Oswald's replacement." (Ref. 3)
