Instant Messanging is a way to "talk" to people online, however if you think about it IM is not really like talking or real life at all. Here is a list o f ways that IM is different than talking:
When we talk people hear what we say as we are saying it. In IM people get to see what we says AFTER we say it. Imagine when you are talking you say something and then you have to decide to "send" the message to your contact before the messange is sent to the contact, and when they do recieve the messange they can listen to it at there own pace and listen to it over and over again if they wanted to...

In real life we dont have a list of family members, friends and other contacts that are around you. If you want to talk to someone you have to go look if they are there or not. Also, in real life you can't see someone who is away or out to lunch or who is gonna be right back. Also you cant still talk to someone even if thet are busy.

In IM if you are look at a contact and you don't know who it is you can click on their name and it will tell you. In real life you can't go up to someone and poke them to find out who they are, you have to ask them.

Another thing that a lot of people do on Instant Messangers is block people or appear offline. In real life you can't prevent people from knowing if you are there or not. If they see you they know you are there and can go up to you and talk to you. The most you can really do is ignore them...

Another thing is, in real life people do not have display pictures or display names.

And emoticons, sure SOME are like real life when people can see you facial expression but the ones that are like animals and other items that aren't on the face are unrealistic. In real life I can't change my face into a sheep or money of anthing like that can I???

In the IM world you can talk to any amount of contacts at a time. In the real world, sure you can have conversations with many people in them BUT you can't have more than one conversation at a time.

There are many other ways that IM is not like talking in real life talking but these are the first ones that came to mind. What do you think about this topic? Do have any other ways that IM is not like real talking? if so please comment/answer below...

also, when you are logged on and you leave the room or something some one else in the house can start talking and your friend will think it's you. if you had to relate im or the internet to real life it would be hundreds of people sitting in a dark room with masks and nametags. kinda creepy...

Dear, its a completely obvious and established fact that MSN is nothing like real face to face talking, and serves only to emulate some of the possibilities. So there is hardly any need to compare unless you were doing a project on it or something.

All these innovations in technology are ironically creating a generation of people, who have no communication skills. It is real to them because they don't know any different. They can also assume any identity they want, which is very tempting for many people who feel they cannot communicate well being themselves.

MSN is good when the person (you know) is very far away, and so physically unreachable (in that sense MSN serves to enhance communication) but should never be thought of as a substitute for real conversation.

I dont think IM is like real talking because text doesnt express the real feelings of the person because when we talk we can express our voice in some form and when text messaging is different.

Emoticons are a way tp share some feelings but most of the emoticons are just funny emoticons and just for fun, they usually not represent anything human beings do :)

IM's are informal and don't have any real etiquette requirements. Phone conversations always begin with a greeting when answered. It's more personal.
