I have a 1990 ex 500. It used to run perfect, then I parked it for a couple of weeks to replace the flywheel because the battery wouldn't stay charged. But now it seems like the timing is off. I have a brand new battery, I have spark and I can smell gas but the engine is not turning over smoothly? Any help would really help.

1. Check your oil level, if you can. Putting too much oil in there can cause the engine to run badly.

2. Maybe crud settled in the carburetor or whatever. Get a bottle of the gas additive carburetor cleaner and add it to your gasoline. Despite the instructions, don't pour the whole bottle in -- use only about a fourth.

Check the air intake passageways for leaks or loose connections, or a dirty air filter. Check the timing of the spark, too, to make sure it's sparking at the right place. If it still won't run, it may be the timing chain has jumped a tooth.
