You're right -- B.C. means "before Christ." A.D. stands for anno domini, which is Latin for "the year of our LORD." Someone goofed the calendar along the way, so best estimates place the life of Jesus at 3 B.C. to 30 A.D., but you're right -- if the calendar were accurate, Jesus would have lived from 1 A.D. to 33 A.D.

One of the things that happened was that early on in the ballgame, everyone involved in this issue, including Jesus himself, was Jewish, so they used the Jewish calendar.
However, the Jewsih calendar is over 5000 years old now, so that gives us a pretty good estimate about when Jesus was actually born. And in fact it is about 4 BC to about what should be year 1.
On the other hand, the romans used the Julian calendar, named after Julius Caesar. This calendar had some grave mistakes in it, and when the Roman Empire eventually became christian, the use of the Julian calendar was promoted.
In the end, it was until about the mid 1700's that Pope Gregory XII, I believe, saw that there were in fact many problems with the Julian calendar, and so he commissioned that design of a new calendar, that among other things, included the leap year.
Another little story is that somewhere in some monastery in the Mountains in ancient Bavaria, some monks decided to interpret Scripture and based on astrological patterns determined an estimated date of Jesus' birth. I'm not sure that that is historically accurate, but it wouldn't be too crazy...
As far as the BC and AD go, yeah well, someone came up with the idea that ancient history and modern history was to be divided by the momentous occasion that was the birth of our saviour. However, this is purely an English thing.
In Spanish, for example, the terms are AC (antes de Cristo, before Christ) and DC (despues de Cristo, after Christ).
So as you can see, it is purely an English thing as far as the use of the abbreviations AD and BC. Although now it is becoming more politically correct to use BCE and CE instead of what we all learnt in grade school.

BC means Before Christ. AD means Anno Domini (Latin for In the Year of out Lord).
There is some confusion regarding when precisely Christ was born. In the Gospel according to Matthew, it declares that He was born before the death of Herod, which took place in 4 B.C. However, in the Gospel according to Luke, He was born during the time of a census commanded by Rome. The problem is that the Romans did not conduct censuses in client states, but only in officially annexed provinces, which Palestine became in A.D. 6. Thus there is a 9-year difference between the two.
There's not an exact year of death given either as the Gospels tend to be vague. However, it was definite between A.D.27 (the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius, according to Luke) and A.D. 34 (when he passed away). It was likely somewhere around A.D. 30, give or take a year or two.
This has probably confused you more, but that's the information that I have. Hope it helps.

Yeah, it makes no sense. BC is Before Christ -- in English. AD is Anno Domini -- in the Year of the Lord, in Latin. I have no idea why one is English, and the other is Latin.
Then , there's no Year Zero because the Romans couldn't count zero. And Christ died in 29 AD at age 33, so he was born in 4 BC -- remember, no Year Zero. Of course, he wouldn't have known what year it was anyway, because they didn't come up with this method for identifying the years for another five or six centuries.
And now they say BC and AD promote religion, so they've changed it to BCE (Before the Common Era) and CE (Common Era). Oh well .....
