im 14 and im not strong at all. i absolutely hate lots of competition but someone suggested i try it, and they said my school's swim coach is nice and its really not that competitve. i dont want to sound whiny, but i dont have a lot of stamina (i guess i could fix that though) im more of a books person, not a sports person. is swimming a good sport for me then?

Swimming is competitive but the practices (only in high school) can be somewhat social, be prepared to work hard. The reason you practice is to get stronger, build up stamina, and get better. Every year we had a dozen girls that could barely swim the length of the pool. By the end of the season they were just as good as our average swimmers. Go out and have fun. Your coach will help you find an event that you can do. Go have some fun and get your nose out of the book for an hour.

Sarah, GO FOR IT....I was nervous at the age of 10, But I had a GREAT instructor. Not only did I perform well, I swam thru High School, and received a half scholarship at the University of Arizona for swimming. Talk to the coach, start non-competitive then progress from there. Good Luck.

I'm kinda like you I HATE compition espically sense im easily discouraged ,but the point of competing is to lose sometimes ,but still feel like a winner. I have been swimming for 12 years im 15 right now. I have found I make tons of friends I stay in great shape ,but more importantly I feel like I am my own person. No one swims exactly like another person and there are people better and worse than everyone. I think it's a great sport for everyone. Doesn't matter what your hobbies are or your talents. Swimming builds charater and self confidence. Now it's up to you. Personally I think you should go for it!

Good luck

You swim for the joy of swimming. Don't worry about competition, the worst you can do is be last (if you finish the race).

When I went to college, I flunk the swimming test. Yes flunk. I took all the swimming courses (learning to swim, life saving and Water Safety Instructor). I finally taught under my coach an intermediate class. I love my coach. I love swimming because it felt free from the other academic stresses. That is my story.

So enjoy swimming. Try to finish each race; don't worry how you place. And as you get stronger (and you will get stronger), remember the previous sentence with key words, enjoy and try.

It doesn't sound like you are someone that would thrive in that environment. No matter what they say, the sport will be competitive. While you could adjust to the athleticism (stamina, strength etc), I think you'd be disappointed because you'd be in one of the lower parts of the team (freshman team, not JV or varsity or anything). Personally, I say go do something you enjoy. If you really WANT to go out for swimming, then do it, but it doesn't sound like that at all by what you are saying.

i've been swimming for five years, and it's really a lot of fun. plus, if you're 14, the whole high school swim meet thing is really good for meeting new people and it's a blast.

if it's your first year your coach really won't be that hard on you, although, if you do join high school swimming you'll have to wake up at like 5 am for morning practices certain days and swim 6 days a week.. but whatever. it's harder for people that have been swimming longer because they have to do harder sets anyway.

Swimming is a great form of exercise so I say go for it.. With more time applied to swimming your stamina will get better. You will feel better about yourself also because you are a participant and not just a spectator of a great sport.. I hope to see u on T.V during the Olympics one day :) GOOD LUCK and start stroking he he

You say that u dont have stamina... so its good to swim.. Coz after u swim, u will feel pretty hungry.. That time, eat food with high fibre content, eat healthy food instead of breads and pizzas... Eat somethings like fish, or greens, or oatmeal , corn etc etc.. U will get lots of stamina.. And take some vitamins if u really feel ure weak.. and drink lots of milk.. coz that gives u calcium... Kids shud generally drink lots of milk.. Atleast a litre daily...

well swimming can be the easiest of sports or the hardest, personally my swim team for highschool kicks our butts we do 14-16000 yards a day in two practices, morning and nights. However my friend swims at a school where they have 1 practice and they only do 6 to 8 grand in that one practice, so its up to you
