First of all the most important thing you can do is to RELAX - tension is counter-productive to muscle responses (Aaron Shearer, Classic Guitar Method). Second, rehearse as if you were actually performing! And if you get "stage fright" use that energy as a tool and transform it into "stage energy" instead. However, the best thing you can do is to get up on that stage and play - there is no substitute for experience, and there is no other way to get it. And don't forget to do vocal warm ups before your performance, and to do vocal exercises every single day. And pray that you have a good sound person, and good monitors so you can hear what you are doing. Good luck!!!

all this talk about a lot of alcohol might actually be a hinderance rather than a positive. if you need to loosen up, have a shot or two, but don't get drunk or else it'll affect your performance.

practice a lot. and make sure you are emotionally ready for whatever the outcome is.

break a leg!

take a shot of alcohol just before you go out on stage and good luck. that's what i hear a lot of musicians do just to take the edge off some. it always worked for me for public speaking events and things. GOOD LUCK TO YA'!!

I don't think you need much preparation...the talent level at open mic nights is pretty low.
