Sometimes the perineum does tear as the baby is coming out, but studies have shown that it's actually better to tear than to get an episiotomy (where they cut you surgically just in case). A tear can be first, second or third degree. If it happens (for a lot of women it doesn't) you usually don't feel it in the flurry of pushing the baby out and all those other strong sensations. It's after the birth when your stitches are healing that the site of the tearing hurts. But it heals in a week or two.
Ask your doctor or midwife if they can do "perineal massage" during the pushing phase. This is where they put pressure on that area with a lubricated finger or even a warm compress, thereby decreasing the chance that it will tear. Studies have shown that practitioners who use this technique have a much lower rate of tearing.
If you do tear, you will get a local anesthesia as they stitch you up.

well sometimes you get ripped but if the nurses are smart and they realise that the baby is big they can give you an epsiotomy which is a cut instead of you tearing and it heals better too. i had it done the nurse numbed the area first then she made the cut and the stitches didnt hurt when they were doing it

The baby can cause a laceration or the doctor will make an incision to minimize the damage. If you have an epidural you won't feel the stitches. If you go natural with no drugs they might inject Novocain or just do it with no medication. Talk to the doctor and find out what he/she does when stitches are needed.

Yes it is true. Sometimes the doctor will cut you, other doctors like to let you rip on your own. By the time you get to stitches that area has been through so much you don't even feel it.

Yes, it is true. If you have an epidural you wont feel the tear or the stitches. Its after the fact that hurts. But the stitches dissolve and you really dont even know they are there.

In some cases it does rip but i have no idea about the stitches part. But i really think that the doctor would not let that happen. they would go through a C-section

i have kinda wondered myself . i have 5 kids and have not had stitches at all . i did rip a little but it wasnt where they needed to stitch it up .
i know they numb you when they stitch it . and have heard several of my friends complain that it hurts for a while after .
i have also heard that having a csection is much more painful

It depends on your doctor. My doctor cut me so that the baby wouldn't tear me. It doesn't hurt when they give you stitches, you just feel pressure. It works like any other way they give you stitches.

Yes. When my mom had her last baby, back in 1999, the doctor ripped it for her so that it would rip in a straight line. I think that hospitals might now a days be ripping it for you. I've heard instances where it could rip all the way to your butt hole, so that is why some hospitals will rip it for you. They did the same thing to my Aunt when she had her baby too.

It can happen, although it also may not. I've had three, and i didn't tear with any of them. Some women do tear, but they do stitch you up they numb the area. And honey, after pushing that kids out, stiches aren't gonna feel like anything!!!
