I need assistance identifying this sword. I will do my best to describe it to you.

The sword is one that we have owned for wuite some time, but had been in storage in the attic. I recently brought it out and have looked it over but cant quite identify the actual origin and type.

The sword has a slightly curved blade and is of Bastard length. The blade itself is very wide, and quite heavy. The grip is suited to a single hand, but can be used with two. The pommel is flarred wide and preventss the hand from slipping off the heavy sword.

The quillion is not as large as most, and sweeps foward on both sides. Most distinguishing feature is the curvature of the blade, it almost resembles a middle eastern weapon, but has a spanish look and feel to it.

I know this is hard to do by mere words, but can someone point me in the right direction as to the type and origin of this sword.

My initial guess is Spanish, with some sort of middle eastern influence.

The sword is nto a scimitar. That i am sure of. Nor is it a type of breaker sword. The sword appears to have been used as something to counter heavy swords, being a little more easy on the hands than conventional Bastard Swords.

It's just about impossible to identify a sword by description alone unless there are markings that are unique to the sword type. That almost never happens except with military weapons. I'd suggest you take a few pictures of your sword and put them up on swordforum.com. There are some real experts there who will be happy to help you identify your sword. Be prepared for disappointment though, most swords are not worth nearly as much as people think they might.

The sword was probably made in Spain...If you are having trouble making out the detail or wording on it because of like a turnish or worn out look - you can take a piece of foil and rub it on the sword to clean the blade and there usually is writing up near the handle....that is were it is marked on my sword that says Spain on it and that is how i got more of the detail carvings to show more where i can see it clearly. Hope this helps some.

would really help if you could post a link to a photo. My original thought would be scimitar, but you say that's not it. Might be a hunting sword, or a Chinese broadsword, but I'm just guessing.
