This is for people who are NOT in the music industry, whether proffesional or other wise. This is for the general public: How would you classify Phantom? As opera, classical or a musical?

Just for the record, I know what it is, I'm just curious.

To pooh8402, The amount of spoken dialogue is not what makes an opera. Phantom is a musical (not a matter of opinion, just the way it is) largely becuase it is contemporary music. There is a very large difference between the music of an opera and that of a musical. I'm always surprised to see how many people would say it's an opera (that's also why I asked only people not involved in the music industry, because they'd know it's a musical inherently) and also, there is no difference between the movie and the musical that would put it in a different genre.

It is a musical. Some talking, some singing. Just because it has "opera" in the name of it, doesn't mean it is an opera.

Opera. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote it as such.

I think most people are thinking of the movie. The live show has very little talking. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music before there were ever lyrics or words added to it. Sometimes operas have talking as well.

Also, just because it's in English, doesn't mean it's not an opera. Opera is a style, and can be in any language. Most of Mozart's operas were written in German. There are also Spanish, French, and Latin operas.
