If the TV isn't always on from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed then the child really won't be interested in it until he is about 2. Oh, he may stop and watch it for a minute, but he won't sit through an entire show and definitely not a 2 hour movie. An occassional glance at the TV won't hurt. Just try not to make all your family time as watching TV. But when your family does want to enjoy a flick, give him/her some toys and let them have some "alone time" in their room, or put him in his high chair with a little snack. I have 5 children, and and our TV is not the main focus in our home. Our oldest two are 9 and 7 and they are the only ones who will sit down and watch something all the way through. Our 5 and 3 yr. old will watch some and then they go play with something else. And of course, our 1 yr.old don't care. So, by all means, enjoy family TV time, just don't make that your only family time.

Kids barely sit still long enough to do anything when they are that age. My kids only sat still for Sesame Street and I love that show, would recommend it to any parent because it really does teach so many things! My daughter knew her alphabet by sight at almost 2 yrs old and she is now 4 1/2 and is writing her name, words and almost reading! I'm not saying it's all because of Sesame Street but I would say it's helped. I never deprive them of educational shows and I definitely monitor everything they watch and make sure they are doing more than just watching TV.
I wouldn't think it would harm anything if the mom is watching her show and the baby is in the same room....no big deal...unless TV rules the house...

Who recommended that? Studies actually show that watching TV as an infant actually is good for the baby. It helps stimulate their brains because of the sound and lights, as long as what is on is age appropriate. TV becomes bad for a child later in life because it leads to a sedentary lifestyle (ex: children sit there watching the tube instead of playing outside, riding bikes, etc...) This is not the case for an infant who cannot engage in those types of physical activites. There is nothing wrong with your baby seeing the TV.

Well I have heard that, too, but when my kids were that age I let them watch Barney and Baby Einstein and stuff. But it't hard to keep them away from the TV. When the whole family watched TV, set the baby down with some toys in the playpen so it will be entertained while you watch TV.

Who told you that babies are not supposed to watch tv in the 1st two years of their life? thats a load of crap! there are educational tv shows or dvds that are great for babies as long as they are not watching it all day and all night! a couple hours of tv is good for a baby and it gives you time to get things done too!

My daughter has been watching TV since she was born. She loves watching her Baby Einstein DVD's. She will sit and just stare at them. I'm not going to go out of my wayy and turn on a show that I think is inapproiate for a child. If my husband and I are watching a comedy on TV she is usally playing with her toys because it really doesn't interest her.

our family only watches a little bit of tv at night after dinner and just before bed . the tv is not on at all during the day unless we are watching a weather advisory or some other urgent problem .
tv is not really good for kids at any age. kids and adults need to be more active . my oldest 2 boys spend time at their dads house doing nothing but watching tv. they soemtimes get uspset when they come home and the tv is not on 24/7 as their dad allows .however after a while they find neat things to do and forget about the tv.
it make it easier on me because i can use the tv as a special treat too .

No t.v.????? Are you serious? I have anywhere from 2 to 4 kids ages 3 and under with me any given day. Without t.v. I would lose it. You just have to have them watch shows made for them. PBS kids, baby einstein, nick jr., and plenty of others. They are very educational and can help a baby advance alot. T.v. doesn't necessarily make them couch potatoes as long as you encourage them to go play as well. Hell my son and the others will run back and forth between there activity and whatever cartoon they are watching. My 11 month old is even trying to talk already. So I don't really see whats wrong with t.v., it has great benefits as long as you have them watch the right things.

I do not believe in this but if you are a parent who wants to do it my hats off to you!!!!! Have a television room for the rest of the family and do not allow the baby in thier. If you are the one setting the rule then remember that YOU are the one who has to sacrifice TV as well. Once the baby is asleep then you can sit and watch. Good Luck!

It becomes a great opportunity for a family to rid themselves of the burden of TV. You now have incentive to do things together without it on. I am not saying toss it on the curb and never watch again, but realistically, it can be signicantly lessened in almost everyones life. Once you miss a few weeks of those shows you watched regularly, and you forget how wrapped up in fictional characters you were, you won't need to have it on all the time.
